Ode To Quetzalcoatl

by Dave Bixby

about

I first heard about Dave Bixby when a friend gave me a CD and said, “You’ll find this guy interesting. He lost his mind on acid, joined a cult, and recorded an album!” That sounded interesting to me since I’ve always been into unusual music. The album was Ode To Quetzalcoatl and the second song Free Indeed really moved me. I decided to cover it on my own album and found Dave's email address on his website. I sent a copy of my rendition for him to hear and he approved. We got to talking and became friends.
Ode To Quetzalcoatl was recorded after Dave’s LSD psychosis when he got involved in a religious cult in Grand Rapids, Michigan called The Movement. The Movement financed and released Ode To Quetzalcoatl in 1969. After the cult disbanded, Dave went on to become a sailor. Forty years later, in 2009, a journalist tracked him down. He informed Dave that his album has been continuously gaining popularity among record collectors and that they're being sold for up to $1,000 each. This came as a surprise.
In 2011 we embarked on a mini tour to perform these songs for the first time in 41 years. Dave drove up to the Midwest from Arizona where he now lives and we played several shows in Illinois and Michigan. Along the way, Nick George of the music publication Far Off Sounds contacted us to play a show in Detroit. That final show ended up being the best one and as a result New Fortune Records pressed a reissue of the OTQ vinyl.
Dave is a truly spiritual person. I help run his Facebook and Bandcamp pages online. It's often that we get messages from people all over the world thanking Dave and saying that OTQ has helped them in some way. I always enjoy telling them from my own experience of working with him now for eight years how kind, loyal, and honest Dave is in addition to his incredible music talent.
